Victoria, B.C. - BBB celebrates 100 years of service internationally and 50 years of service locally in 2012.

Throughout the last 100 years the Better Business Bureau has grown from one small organization in the United States to 116 local BBB’s across the U.S. and Canada. Since 1962 the BBB of Vancouver Island has been helping businesses and consumers work together to build a stronger, trustworthy marketplace. Over 87 million times a year, BBB helps consumers find trustworthy businesses. Over 400,000 businesses across North America meet the BBB’s high standards for Accreditation.

“This anniversary year is a very exciting time for us,” says Rosalind Scott, Executive Director of the BBB of Vancouver Island. “We are among an elite group of businesses and organizations, companies such as Coca-Cola, Ford Motor Company and IBM – that have thrived in the international marketplace for a century or more. Locally we are part of a small group of businesses and organizations that are the foundation of the Vancouver Island marketplace.”

BBB helps people make smarter buying decisions through innovative programs and services such as BBB Business Reviews and ratings, BBB Accredited Businesses, advertising review services, investigations, dispute resolution and the online scam portal, Scam Tracker.

“Without question, the way people buy, sell and communicate has changed tremendously over the last century,” says Scott. “The need for an ethical marketplace has not. BBB is constantly evolving to meet the fast changing needs of the marketplace while remaining true to our mission – to help consumers find trustworthy businesses.”

During the Centennial and Golden Jubilee anniversary year, BBB will be launching several new initiatives; hosting local, national and international events and conducting innovative research that will help guide marketplace trust for the next 100 years. BBB has partnered with leading academic institutions, international research powerhouses and business leaders. BBB is leading the charge to define “trust” in a way that hasn’t been done before, to explore and share best practices in self-regulation, and to create cutting-edge products and programs.

“2012 promises to be an exciting year for BBB. Our programs and initiatives will be groundbreaking, not only for us, but for the local marketplace,” says Scott. “We’ll be sharing news and information with you throughout the year, and I hope you’ll take the time to participate in the celebrations with us. After all, it is about Advancing Trust Together!”
